Level Two Arizona Sex Offenders

If a person is convicted of certain sex crimes in Arizona, he or she may be placed on the state’s Sex Offender Registry. Sex offenders are categorized into one of three different levels when they become registered. Level Two Sex Offenders are right in the middle; they are viewed as having a “moderate” risk of reoffending.

What Is a Level Two Sex Offender in Arizona?

Sex offender classifications in Arizona are based on the perceived likelihood of the individual committing another sex crime in the future. An assessment is performed to ascertain the level of threat the individual poses to the public. A Level Two Sexual Offender is at moderate risk of reoffending or recidivism.

By contrast, a Level One Sex Offender has the lowest odds of committing additional sex crimes, while Level Three individuals have the highest odds of reoffending. If a sex offender assessment screening designates an individual in the Level Two category, he or she will have stricter requirements than Level One but less strict than Level Three.

What Is the Assessment Screening for Convicted Sex Offenders in Arizona?

A sex offender assessment screening is a process used in Arizona to evaluate the level of public risk posed by an individual who has been convicted of a sexual offense. This assessment helps determine the odds of recidivism and informs the future management of the offender. The risk assessment is conducted by the local sheriff’s department. It involves various behavioral and psychological evaluations, clinical interviews, and follow-up reviews.

Levels are not assigned based on the underlying criminal offense. An individual could be classified as a Level Two Sexual Offender in Arizona after being convicted of crimes such as sexual assault or abuse, sexual exploitation of a minor, sexual conduct with a minor, child molestation, public sexual indecency involving a child, sex trafficking, and more.

What Are the Restrictions and Requirements for Level Two Arizona Sex Offenders?

An individual who is classified as a Level Two Sex Offender in Arizona will have certain legal requirements that he or she must meet, often for an extended period of time. Depending on the case and individual circumstances, these may include:

  • Being listed on the publicly accessible Arizona Sex Offender Registry.
  • Re-registering on the state registry annually for 25 years.
  • Possessing a driver’s license that indicates a registered sex offender status.
  • Renewing the individual’s driver’s license annually.
  • Promptly reporting any changes or updates to personal information to law enforcement.

These restrictions are designed to ensure public safety and reduce an individual’s risk of committing additional sexual offenses in the future.

Can the Public See a Level Two Sex Offender on the State Registry?

Offenders in the Level Two classification are listed on Arizona’s online database of sexual offenders, which is viewable by the public. Anyone can search the online system and see the names of Level Two offenders.

Background searches will also reveal the individual’s name, age, address, risk level, photograph and the crime he or she committed. Sex offender registration also extends to the national database created by the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

When a Level Two Sex Offender moves to the area, local law enforcement agencies are required to notify homes in the individual’s neighborhood. This typically involves distributing print or electronic flyers to community members, local schools and the offender’s employer. Press releases are not required for Level Two offenders (as they are for Level Three).
